Have you ever frozen, felt uncomfortable, or confused right before hearing, “Tell me about yourself”? If you have, you’re not alone. Many of us struggle to share our stories when meeting new people, setting up a dating profile, or even during a job interview. That’s where the idea for EnhanceMe came from: to give people the tools and confidence to talk about themselves in a way that feels natural and true.

What we learned from 117 conversations

Between May and November 2024, we had real conversations with 117 people—94 men and 23 women—aged 25 to 60, all active on at least one dating app. Our goal was to understand their struggles and behaviors when it came to online dating, and especially how they presented themselves in photos and profile content.

From our sample, 85% of men and 50% of women had issues with either their photos or their profile content—things that might be quietly working against them on dating apps.

We grouped our findings into three main areas:

• How people choose and present their photos
• What they write in their profiles—or avoid writing
• What they're struggling with in today’s dating world

What we saw in the profiles

Our research didn’t stop at photos. A lot of what holds people back online is in what they choose to (or don’t choose to) write. Here's a look at what we observed:

Men’s profiles

In all age groups, men often wrote very little. Some profiles included lines like “I don’t like adding info here, let’s talk in person.”

When it comes to the photos, we noticed a few patterns: group photos, outdated shots, distorted selfies, and gym pics with poor lighting were frequent turn-offs. In the 40+ group, we also saw a lot of overly staged or distant photos that didn’t feel relatable.

Women’s profiles

Women were more likely to write longer bios, but many focused on “dealbreakers”—traits they didn’t want in a partner. While boundaries are important, the tone sometimes came across as critical or defensive.

While women’s photos were often better lit and more curated, we did identify common issues across age groups. Filters, heavy makeup, and photos that felt either too produced or too formal left room for improvement, especially when expressing warmth, confidence, and personality.

The deeper challenge behind the surface

So what’s going on here? It’s not just about writing or photos—it’s about clarity. Across profiles, we saw a lack of depth, warmth, and storytelling. 80% of the people we analyzed came across as overly polished, vague, or guarded.

We believe that it plays a big part in why meaningful connections often don’t happen. You can’t connect with someone you don’t really see.
